Bobotie – A Classic South African

Bobotie is indeed a classic South African dish with roots in Cape Malay cuisine. It’s a spiced, baked minced meat dish topped with an egg-based custard. Here’s a simple recipe for Bobotie:

Ingredients:

For the Meat Mixture:

  • 1 kg (about 2 pounds) ground beef or lamb
  • 2 slices white bread
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 tablespoons apricot jam
  • 2 tablespoons chutney (fruit relish)
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup raisins or sultanas

For the Topping:

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric (for color)
