Amish Custard Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
- 4 cups hot water
- 6 eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Nutmeg for decoration
Instructions:
- Preheat Oven: Set the oven to 325 degrees F.
- Prepare Custard Mixture: In a glass or metal bowl, mix the sweetened condensed milk and hot water together.
- Whisk Eggs: In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs until they become light in color and fluffy.
- Combine Ingredients: Gradually pour the hot milk mixture into the eggs, whisking continuously to prevent curdling. Mix thoroughly until well combined. Add vanilla extract and salt, stirring until incorporated.
- Prepare Baking: Pour the custard mixture into individual serving bowls or a 2-quart baking dish. Place these bowls or the baking dish on a high-sided baking tray.
- Baking: Create a water bath by filling the baking tray with water, about half an inch high. Place the tray in the preheated oven. Bake for approximately 1 hour or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. If using a larger baking dish, bake for around 1 hour and 40 minutes.
- Cooling: Once baked, allow the custard to cool for about an hour.
- Final Touch: Sprinkle the custard with nutmeg for added flavor and decoration.
- Serving: Serve the custard either warm or chilled, according to preference.
