French onion sausage rolls

  1. Prepare the Onion Filling:
    • In a skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until they start to soften.
    • Reduce heat to medium-low, add butter, and continue cooking until onions are caramelized. This process may take about 20-25 minutes.
    • Sprinkle sugar over the onions and stir in balsamic vinegar. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the onions are richly caramelized. Set aside to cool.
  1. Prepare the Sausage Mixture:
    • In a bowl, combine the ground sausage, salt, pepper, and dried thyme. Mix well.
  2. Assembly:
    • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
    • Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut the sheet in half lengthwise.
    • Spread the sausage mixture evenly over the pastry, leaving a small border along one long edge.
    • Spread the caramelized onion mixture over the sausage.
  1. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the onions.
  2. Brush the exposed border with water.
  3. Roll the pastry tightly from the edge with the filling, creating a log. Seal the edge by pressing it gently.
  4. Repeat the process with the other half of the pastry.
  5. Slice and Bake:
  1. Cut each log into smaller rolls, about 1.5 inches wide. Place the rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of the rolls with the egg wash.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown and cooked through.
  1. Serve:
    • Allow the French onion sausage rolls to cool slightly before serving. They can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.

These French onion sausage rolls make for a delicious appetizer or snack. The combination of caramelized onions, savory sausage, and flaky pastry is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. Enjoy!
