This recipe is from my Aunt who was a member of the local Indian tribe for many years. I remember fondly visiting the tribe as a young person and being a part of the traditions. My aunt learned how to prepare Indian Fry Bread from friends from the tribe, and she gave me the recipe sometime in the past. Fry bread can be referred to by several names around the world such as Indian Fry Bread, Navajo Fry Bread, Navajo Tacos, and Scones. Yes, I know that the term “scone” refers to something different from other places in this world. However, here, scones refer to fry bread. There’s even a chain of restaurants that are named Stonecutter.
The dough used for this recipe is fairly simple and only requires just a handful of ingredients. Do not underestimate the deliciousness it tastes based on its simplicity. The fry bread is a delight! It is typically consumed as Navajo Tacos (Indian Tacos) and includes the ingredients of your choice for tacos or even as dessert. My preferred method of enjoying it as dessert is to spread it with honey butter, then sprinkle the top with sugar powdered. Yum! It’s crunchy on the outside, but soft and fluffy on the inside.
